We were very excited about our June meeting – Cheese and Wine tasting!
Our members were treated to a selection of 6 different wines – 2 whites, 2 reds and 2 roses – and 6 different local cheeses to try out.
The evening started off with an introduction to wine tasting from Paul and Sam, who took us through taste wine (turns out there’s more to it than just drinking the stuff!). So we swirled and sniffed before we finally got to sip, trying to pick out the different notes and flavours of the different varieties. Paul and Sam were also available to answer any question we had about the different wines.
All the wines available on the night came from Cloud Wine, a local wine shop on Bedford Place. If you’re thinking of picking up one of the wines we had on the night, they were; Domaine De Naudy (Cabernet Franc), Wente Estate (Syrah), Adobe (Sauvignon Blanc), Principato (Pinot Grigio), Ancora Chiaretto Barbera (Rose) and Burlesque (White Zinfandel).
The six local cheeses came from Lyburn Farmhouse Cheesemakers based in Landford near Salisbury. The cheese on offer were; an Isle of Wight Blue, an Isle of Wight Soft, a Lyburn Old Winchester, a Lyburn Stoney Cross, a Lyburn Gold and a Lyburn Lightly Oak Smoked.
We played a little game of guess the cheese, trying to match the cheeses to their descriptions and names. Not as easy as you might think – could you pick out a ‘distinct earthy finish’ or ‘nuttiness’ in a cheese?
We also had Roberta from Orzo Coffee with us for the evening, giving out samples of the barley coffee and cakes made with it!
Everyone seemed to have a great evening, even if we did leave feeling a little over-indulged!
We would like to thank all our members who came along and made the evening such fun, as well as Sam and Paul, Cloud Wine, Roberta, Orzo Coffee, Lyburn Farmhouse Cheeses, Sainsbury’s Portswood who supplied the crackers and Long’s of Portswood who supplied the grapes.
