Book Binding – 28th August 2012

For our August meeting we were lucky enough to have Katherine Anteney of Red Hot Press come and teach us a bit about book binding. Red Hot Press is a fine art print workshop based in Southampton that runs print making and book binding courses for all levels of ability.

I have to say, I never realised there was so much to learn about paper and folding paper. On the face of it, that might not sound like the most exciting way to spend an evening, but Katherine is a great teacher and very funny and we all had fun messing around with paper!

As well as learning about grades of paper and folding techniques, we also learnt how to make a couple of different types of book – from a simple eight page book made from folding one sheet of A3 paper, through to some slightly more complex ones which we sewed together. Katherine had some lovely examples of her own work to give us some ideas of what we could bind books for – photo books, notebooks, information booklets, invitations

We also had a bit of a recipe swap with the intention that we could all make our own little recipe books with our new book binding skills. Extra copies of all the recipes were collected and we will be binding them together as a prize in next months raffle!

If you are interested in learning more about book binding or print making check out the Red Hot Press website to find out more about their courses.

Our next meeting is burlesque dancing, but don’t worry, we won’t be stripping, just learning a few basic moves and how to take off a robe/cardigan in a seductive way! The meeting is on Tuesday 25th September, venue to be announced.

Thanks for your continued support. Do get in touch is you have any comments or suggestions, this WI is for everyone and we’re always looking for your input. We are also hoping to have a news section in our newsletter to help us all get to know each other a bit better – so if you’ve got any news (engagements, weddings, babies, jobs, exams, a particularly good cake recipe!) do let us know.
